Throughout its run, Fire Country has dug into the story of Bode Leone (Max Thieriot), but his potential replacement has set something up that could ultimately save the CBS series. Bode, who’s long been the main character of Fire Country, has become someone tougher to resonate with as the series has continued and his story has moved from being less of an underdog tale and more of the standard fare. While Bode started off in the Three Rock camp with the odds stacked against him, seeing him grow into a possible leader at Cal Fire has been a long journey.
While Bode has continued to serve as the central figure of Fire Country, it’s long felt like his journey has been winding down, or at least changing in ways that would allow the series to move its focus to someone else. With new characters coming into the mix with Three Rock year after year, Fire Country’s expanded on some of their journeys, but has never fully moved away from Bode. Instead of having Bode be the main figure on screen, at this point, Fire Country season 5 should be taking advantage of the newest character they’ve brought into the season.
With the series having decided to dig into Manny Perez’s (Kevin Alejandro) story by bringing his nephew, Angel (Ethan Jones Romero), into the mix at Three Rock, Fire Country has branched out a family tree outside of the Leone’s. With another family tree weaving its way into the fabric of the show, Fire Country could’ve found its saving grace.

Throughout the first stretch of Fire Country season 5, viewers had the chance to learn about Manny’s nephew, Angel Perez. A new member of the Three Rock squad, Angel has a reputation when he comes into the camp that he doesn’t find himself living down quickly. It becomes obvious that Manny’s relationship with his family, specifically the relationship he has with Angel and his father, Manny’s older brother Ricardo, isn’t a good one. Ricardo, who’s currently in prison for murder, was said to once have been Manny’s hero, but in the aftermath of his sentence, Manny didn’t stick around for the family.
Angel’s perception of Manny is an interesting one, given the fact that Angel himself just went from a prison sentence to being a part of the Three Rock team. Angel isn’t fond of Manny because of his perceived betrayal, and the pair have yet to truly talk about their past in a meaningful capacity. According to Manny, Angel’s the next in line to be the leader of the gang that led his father to prison, but with Angel a part of Three Rock, their relationship is bound to change. With so much tension, they’re bound to be a big part of Fire Country season 5 moving forward.
Fire Country Leaning Into A New Family Story Could Save The Show

With Fire Country season 5 leaning more into the tension between Angel, Manny, and their family history, the series has the makings for an exciting story that could span over the course of seasons. After seeing how the series could stretch out the story between Bode and his family, who struggled to reconnect for the first several seasons of Fire Country after Bode’s time at Three Rock, it’s clear that the series understands how to move through the paces of family drama. Angel and Manny may not be able to anchor the show entirely, but could make for a great storyline.
While Bode’s story hasn’t come to an end, it does feel like it could be time for the series to pass the torch to a new protagonist who needs to grow somewhat more than he does. Angel, who’s only just come into firefighting and has a lot to work through, could be a fantastic choice to replace Bode as the central focus of the series. With Manny supporting and their family drama the backdrop of the next stretch of the series, Fire Country could be preparing to make a major shift that would effectively save the series moving forward.
