Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Boston Blue Season 2.Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) is experiencing a major change in Boston Blue that never took place during his entire career with the New York Police Department in Blue Bloods. Boston Blue Season 2, Episode 1, “The Crash,” revealed that Danny Reagan was up for a detective sergeant promotion with the Boston Police Department. Despite Danny’s hesitance to accept the role, his partner, Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), encouraged him to take it, and Danny eventually accepted the job. This marks a bold new era for Danny’s character arc as his career progresses in an exciting new way.
Danny Reagan Is Finally Ready To Climb the Ladder
Throughout his NYPD career, as depicted in Blue Bloods, Danny always stayed in his detective role, without moving up the ladder. Danny preferred fieldwork, and he likely felt it was the best fit for him in the shadow of his father, Francis Reagan (Tom Selleck), and his grandfather Henry Reagan (Len Cariou), who became NYPD commissioners. However, in Boston Blue, Danny finds himself in a new city, giving him a fresh start, and now he finally feels determined to advance his career.

However, Danny was initially hesitant to accept the promotion, fearing it would upset the balance of his partnership with Lena, who was gunning for the same position back in the series premiere. It demonstrates how far Lena and Danny’s partnership has come because he values her career and judgment over his own. Later, in the best scene in “The Crash,” Lena reveals she didn’t put in for the sergeant’s promotion, realizing she’s happy with her current role, and she gives Danny her blessing to accept the promotion.
Another great scene between Danny and his son Sean Reagan (Mika Amonsen) in the Season 2 premiere reveals that Danny promised Sean that he intends to advance in the BPD, just like Francis and Henry did in New York. This is a major moment for Danny as it reinforces that he plans to fulfill the Reagan family legacy in the BPD and is taking steps that he previously avoided. It’s a new era and path for Danny Reagan in Boston Blue.

Image via CBSSeason 2, Episode 3, “Fire in the Hole,” shows Danny adjusting to his new role as sergeant detective in the BPD’s major case unit. Danny’s new role essentially makes him the lead detective and the division’s boss. Early in the episode, Danny gets incredibly strict with one of the unit’s detectives, Bruce Sullivan (Tyrone Savage), for taking his shoes off and putting his feet on the desk while scrolling on his phone. Danny quickly recognizes that he might have lost his temper with Sullivan, but he doesn’t want the unit to be lax with decorum and their duties while on shift.
This is a major change for Danny, who has mentored other detectives and given orders to patrol officers before, but he’s never actually been “the boss.” It’s a refreshing angle for the character and interesting to see because the Sullivan scene portrays a bit of Danny’s old-school hotheadedness emerging in his new role. Danny generally portrays a much nicer and softer image in Boston Blue, so it was amusing to see a bit of the old Danny come out with Sullivan. Later, Sullivan steps up his game, as Danny’s teachable moment definitely got through to him. The episode also includes Danny and Lena managing an incredibly difficult and intense case, where an off-duty officer shoots an undercover detective, creating a powder-keg situation for the entire BPD. Danny exhibits incredible grace under pressure and keeps a cool head throughout the emotionally charged investigation.
What Danny’s Promotion Means for ‘Boston Blue’

Boston Blue has had its share of issues, but Danny finally progressing in his law enforcement career is one of the most exciting aspects of Season 2. Blue Bloods kept Danny quite stagnant at times in his role as a detective, never moving up the ladder or chain of command. Now, Danny is genuinely motivated to progress his career, and his new role as detective sergeant gives the character a whole new energy.
Future seasons of Boston Blue could explore Danny transitioning to higher offices. He began the series as a consulting NYPD detective, eventually becoming an official BPD detective, and now he’s graduated to a detective sergeant. It might be too early to say he could become a future chief of police, but why not? Sean said his dad’s goal is to move up the ladder like Danny’s dad and grandfather, who both became NYPD commissioners. That means becoming commissioner is Danny’s ultimate goal, and it will be interesting to see if it ever comes to fruition during Boston Blue’s run.
