Carlos Correa will not return to the Houston Astros this season, manager Joe Espada announced Tuesday, despite the third baseman’s attempts to rejoin the team from ankle surgery.

Correa, who was ramping up his baseball activity in Florida, did not have a setback with his ankle, Espada said. But the area “kind of flared up” as Correa increased his workload, Espada said.

“The buildup the last couple of days has really kind of been tough on his leg, it’s kind of created some soreness and stuff like that,” Espada said.

“The focus will be to have Carlos be ready to go 100 percent next spring training. That’s where our focus will go right now with Carlos.”

Correa had surgery to repair a torn peroneus brevis tendon in his left ankle in early May. The surgery was initially thought to be season-ending, but Correa was attempting a faster-than-expected return.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
