Cardinals work out four receivers, sign one

· · 3 min read

The Arizona Cardinals had a very deep receiver room when the regular season began. And now, they traded away Marv Harrison and then Jalen Brooks became injured and subsequently had surgery, which placed him on IR.

The once-very deep receiver room became a bit too shallow for the Cardinals coaching staff, so GM Monti Ossenfort brought in four receivers for workouts, plus a quarterback.

The five players included QB Jack Plummer, and receivers Zay Jones, James Proche, Xavier Guillory, and Ronnie Bell. After the workout, Arizona inked Jones to a contract.

Jones played for the Cardinals during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. In his final year, he tore his Achilles in Week 10 against the Seattle Seahawks and was placed on season-ending IR. Arizona did not re-sign him, and during free agency he inked a one-year deal with the Houston Texans. He had a good training camp, but was released on the final cutdown.

He played in 19 games with the Cardinals, with two starts. Jones had 29 targets, 20 receptions for 267 yards, converted 12 first downs, a 13.4-yard-per-catch average, 55 YAC, and one drop. That drop was against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 3 last year, when the Cardinals had the game won if Jones caught the ball. Instead, they punted, and San Fran won the game in the last seconds on a field goal. A win would have given Arizona a 3-0-0 record.

He was a second-round selection by the Buffalo Bills in 2017 out of East Carolina. The Cardinals are now his sixth stop on an NFL roster.

Plummer (6′-5″, 215 pounds) played for the Orlando Storm of the UFL this past spring. He was named the league MVP and All-UFL Team. Plummer was also the UFL passing leader with 195 completions for 2,189 yards, a 65.0% completion percentage, and 17 touchdowns against only one interception. Orlando made the playoffs, but was beaten in the opening round. Plummer, age 27, went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft and signed with the Carolina Panthers. He was waived on the final cutdown, then signed to the practice squad before being brought up to the main roster in late December. He has never played in a live NFL game.

Proche has been in and out of the roster of the Cleveland Browns and is considered a return man, with 68 punt returns and four kickoff returns. He has played in 71 NFL games. Guillory went undrafted in 2025, was signed by the Baltimore Ravens, was waived, and then signed to the practice squad. He has yet to play in an NFL game. Bell was a seventh-round selection by the 49ers in 2023, where he played for two seasons, mainly on special teams. He has been with four NFL clubs and has played in 28 NFL games with zero starts.

Receiver Simi Fehoko, who has mostly gotten snaps on special teams, will now fill Brooks’ role on the offense. The other receivers on the roster are rookie Reggie Virgil and kick returner Devin Duvernay. Listed on the practice squad are Harrison Wallace and Shedrick Jackson.
