The St. Louis Cardinals are riding one of their best stretches of the season, but one of the most difficult decisions of the year may have arrived just as the club heads out on a crucial road trip. According to a report from KMOV’s Tamar Sher, the Cardinals have optioned center fielder Victor Scott II to Triple-A Memphis. The move clears a roster spot for outfielder Nathan Church, who is expected to return from the injured list after recovering from a shoulder strain.

The timing made the news particularly surprising. Just one day earlier, Scott played a key role in St. Louis’ sweep-clinching victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The speedy center fielder laid down an important bunt that helped the Cardinals manufacture offense in a game that perfectly reflected the club’s gritty style of play.

Unfortunately for Scott, roster decisions are rarely made on emotion.

A crowded outfield finally forced the Cardinals’ hand

The Cardinals suddenly have more outfield options than available spots. Lars Nootbaar returned this past weekend after missing the first two months of the season following double heel surgery. Church is now set to rejoin the roster after enjoying a productive start to the year before landing on the injured list. Jordan Walker has also continued to cement his place in the everyday lineup.

That left Scott squeezed out. While his defense remains highly respected throughout the organization, the offensive numbers simply never followed. Scott entered the move batting .194 with two home runs and a .534 OPS. For a Cardinals team trying to keep pace in the National League Central race, production became increasingly difficult to ignore.

The speed that made him a fan favorite never disappeared

Scott quickly became one of the easiest Cardinals to root for. His elite speed, aggressive baserunning and highlight-reel defense helped make him a fan favorite throughout 2025. He stole 34 bases last season and entered 2026 openly talking about chasing 70 steals.

But opposing teams adjusted, and Scott struggled to consistently reach base. Through 60 games, he had just eight stolen bases and wasn’t creating the same havoc that made him such a unique weapon a year ago. Even so, there were signs of life recently.

Over his last several games, Scott had begun showing better at-bats and looked more comfortable offensively. That mini-surge ultimately came too late to prevent the roster crunch created by Nootbaar’s return and Church’s activation.

This may not be goodbye for long

The Cardinals are firmly in the playoff race at 35-28, and roster situations can change quickly over the next two months. If injuries strike or if the Cardinals move an outfielder before the trade deadline, Scott could find himself back in St. Louis sooner rather than later.

For now, however, one of the clubhouse’s most popular players is headed back to Memphis. And despite helping the Cardinals complete a sweep just hours earlier, Scott became the odd man out in a suddenly crowded outfield picture.
