Baseball has plenty of unusual sights. Position players pitch in blowouts. Catchers steal home. Outfielders rob home runs by reaching over the wall. But what happened in Double-A on Saturday is something most fans may never see again.

St. Louis Cardinals prospect Jurrangelo Cijntje struck out the same batter twice in the same game,  once as a right-handed pitcher and once as a left-handed pitcher.

Yes, really.

The Cardinals’ No. 4 prospect continues to be one of the most fascinating players in professional baseball because he can legitimately pitch with both arms. During Springfield’s doubleheader against Wichita on Saturday, Cijntje gave fans another reminder of just how unique his skill set is.

Garrett Spain stepped into the batter’s box twice against Cijntje and walked away with the same result both times. The difference was that one strikeout came from a right-handed pitcher and the other came from a left-handed pitcher. That’s not something most hitters have to prepare for.

Cardinals continue unique experiment

Cijntje arrived in the Cardinals organization this offseason as part of the trade that sent Brendan Donovan to Seattle. The 23-year-old entered professional baseball with plenty of intrigue because of his ability to throw from both sides. While many wondered whether he would eventually focus on one arm full-time, the Cardinals have continued allowing him to use both.

That decision is producing some entertaining moments.According to MLB Pipeline, Cijntje has faced 207 batters this season and has pitched right-handed against 193 of them. But he still occasionally breaks out the left arm when matchups call for it. For opposing hitters, it creates a challenge unlike anything else in baseball.

Signs of progress for a rising prospect

The unusual strikeouts weren’t the only positive development for Cijntje. He finished Saturday’s outing with six strikeouts over five innings while allowing three runs. More importantly, his overall numbers improved significantly during May.

After posting a 5.82 ERA in April, Cijntje struck out 35 batters during May while issuing only 12 walks. His strikeout-to-walk ratio improved from 1.71 in April to 2.92 in May, showing encouraging progress as he adjusts to Double-A competition. The Cardinals know there’s still development ahead.

But every time Cijntje takes the mound, he provides something most pitchers simply can’t: the possibility that fans might witness baseball history. On Saturday, they did. Not many hitters can say they’ve struck out against the same pitcher from both sides of the mound in the same game.
