Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, is one of the most beloved superheroes in the Marvel Universe. His efforts during World War II with the other Invaders were integral to the Allies achieving victory over the Axis Powers, and he more than earned his status as a symbol of hope and the American spirit. Steve continued his noble efforts decades later after being thawed from suspended animation, this time with allies like the Avengers.
Yet, all this isn’t to say that Captain America always gets along with his fellow champions of peace. Even excluding instances of brainwashing and mind control, there have been multiple instances where Steve has found himself on opposing sides with friends and comrades to stand up for his principles. The Civil War event is arguably the most famous example of this, as Steve led the anti-Superhero Registration Act movement against Iron Man’s pro-Registration forces.
Now Steve once again finds himself at odds with a close ally in the ongoing Captain America series. Though Steve’s body was out of commission during the Avengers: Armageddon storyline while his consciousness was transported to Hell and helped Doctor Doom overthrow Mephisto, he’s already been swept up in its aftermath.

Marvel ComicsThe preview for Captain America opens with Steve watching TV to catch up on everything he missed while unconscious, from the thousands who died during the Avengers’ battle with Red Hulk, to how the United Nations has passed a resolution banning superpowers. Only the United States abstained from this, because, unofficially, there’d be no way to enforce this measure given how many superpowered people live in the country. Steve eventually hears enough, and rather than wait for Sharon Carter to pick him up from the hospital, he leaves on his own.
After leaving Tony Stark a voicemail, Steve is found in the nearby park by Nick Fury Sr., who fills in some of the blanks left out of the news reports. Thunderbolt Ross and Bucky Barnes are both presumed dead (the latter is actually still alive and will return in Immortal Soldiers), S.H.I.E.L.D. is helping the U.N. enforce this superpowers ban, and the inactive Avengers will be restricted to the United States should they reform. Steve is unsurprisingly not on board with this, pointing out to Fury that “good and evil don’t recognize borders.”
Then Steve learns that Vic, i.e. the young clone of Victor von Doom he met in Latveria before he was put into a coma, is actually still alive. That’s enough for the star-spangled hero to threaten Fury, whom he’s been working alongside for years, to “drop it.” Steve demands that he stay out of his way and stick to his lane of patrolling the skies in the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, just like Nick Fury Sr. did, and “try to keep the peace with an iron fist like every fascist fool” before him, then angrily walks away.
Steve Rogers Is Going On The Run With Vic

Even though it’s not stated outright in this preview, Steve is indeed going to search for Vic and place the boy under his protection. That won’t take long to do, but the duo will soon find themselves in a lot of trouble. It was announced a few months ago that Captain America , which kicks off The New World story arc, will see Steve and Vic going on the run when the former refuses to hand the latter over to S.H.I.E.L.D.
Captain America is also bringing back one of his “oldest enemies.” Though the identity of this villain remains a secret, the solicitation for Captain America reveals that they’ll somehow rewrite history and change the world. Steve and Vic will team up with Tony Stark to figure out how to revert things back to normal. However, even after that’s accomplished, Steve will presumably still need to keep Vic safe from Nick Fury Jr., as S.H.I.E.L.D. and the U.N. are concerned about the ramifications of having another Victor von Doom around.
Captain America will be released Wednesday, November 11 by Marvel Comics.
