Despite the Buffalo Bills escaping Monday Night Football with a big win over the LA Rams, Jason Whitlock believes one star needs to be cut from the team.
The Bills looked like they were going to give up the win in overtime after a fumble from James Cook allowed the Rams to get possession.
The Rams failed to convert their field goal attempt, thanks to the Bills’ special teams managing to deflect the kick from Harrison Mevis, which gave the Bills the chance to convert their walk-off field goal to secure the win.
Jason Whitlock believes Buffalo Bills should waive James Cook after overtime blunder
Despite the win, Jason Whitlock was fixated on James Cook’s costly fumble in overtime, and believes the team must make some big decisions about his future.
He suggested that Cook showed he can’t be trusted to protect the ball in late-game situations, and it might lead to him getting cut from the team.
Whitlock said: “You might have to cut James Cook? Can’t trust him in ball security. That will get you cut.”
While Cook did put up strong numbers against the Rams, perhaps no stat highlighted the nature of his performances like his two fumbles during the game.
Across five games, Cook has fumbled the ball four times, meaning that he is averaging a fumble almost every game.
This will definitely be a cause for concern amongst the Bills’ coaching staff, as Cook is one of their primary receiving and carrying options.
Despite his talent, Cook has shown lapses in judgment this season that have cost the Bills in key moments during games.
Cook did score two touchdowns while rushing for 111 yards against the Rams, but his inability to protect the ball, especially in overtime, has caused people to re-evaluate his role within the offensive unit.
It’s unlikely that the Bills will cut or waive Cook after four fumbles to start the season, but it is definitely an area the RB has to work on in the weeks to come, as it could eventually cost the Bills a potential win.
