Cole Caufield and the Montreal Canadiensbounced back from a wild collapse in a big way, and the sniper made NHL history in the process. Caufield scored 30 seconds into overtime to lift Montreal to a 5-4 win over the Utah Mammoth at Bell Centre on Thursday night.

The game-winner was Caufield’s 15th career overtime goal, and he got there faster than anyone in league history. The 25-year-old reached the mark in just 384 career games, beating Connor McDavid, who needed 559 games to get to 15.

Overtime has long been Caufield’s specialty. Last season, he scored back-to-back overtime winners against the Seattle Kraken and Nashville Predators in October, and he reached 40 goals for the first time in his career with an overtime winner against the Boston Bruins in March.

Thursday’s goal was vintage Caufield. On a 2-on-1, the Canadiens forward faked a slap shot before ripping a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Mammoth goaltender Sebastian Cossa to send the Bell Centre crowd home happy.

Montreal had to work for it. Utah’s Logan Cooley put on a show with three goals and an assist, recording his second hat trick in four games. Nick Schmaltz’s power-play goal gave the Mammoth a 4-3 lead early in the third period, but Adam Engstrom tied the game with 5:06 left in regulation to force overtime.

Nick Suzuki made a strong return to the lineup after missing six games with an upper-body injury, finishing with a goal and two assists. Arber Xhekaj and Kirby Dach also scored for Montreal, and Jakub Dobes made 16 saves.

The win was a much-needed response for the Canadiens. Just two nights earlier, Montreal blew a 4-0 lead in the final 2:39 of regulation and lost 5-4 in overtime to the Winnipeg Jets, marking the latest four-goal comeback in NHL history. Caufield had scored in that game, too.

This time, he made sure the Canadiens came out on top in the extra period. Montreal improved to 10-3-3 on the season and has now won six of its last seven games. Utah, meanwhile, fell to 10-6-1.

The Canadiens will look to keep the momentum going when they visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
