Canada beat Chile to open 2030 FIFA World Cup cycle

Canada opened their 2030 FIFA World Cup cycle with a 1-0 victory against nine-man Chile at Toronto FC‘s BMO Field on Saturday night.

In-form Jonathan David scored the lone goal for Les Rouges in the 12th minute, tapping in a rebound after Chile goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux stunningly denied Cyle Larin from point-blank range.

Chile were reduced to 10 men in the 36th minute when Lucas Cepeda was shown a straight red card for a high boot that bloodied Richie Laryea.

Five minutes into the second half, Gabriel Suazo was sent off for his second bookable offense, leaving La Roja with nine men.

Canada now turn their attention toward another South American foe, with a match against Peru from CF Montréal‘s Stade Saputo coming up next Saturday.
