Can Drew Allar win Steelers' QB2 job?

Former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar had a brilliant NFL preseason debut but came back down to earth a little in the Steelers’ second preseason game. There are still rumors surrounding his status as the potential backup to Aaron Rodgers come the start of the season.

Many Steelers fans had initially thought that the job was Mason Rudolph’s to lose, seeing as how much of a cult favorite he has become throughout his Steelers career. However, Allar has flashed his potential enough to turn some heads.

In Brooke Pryor of ESPN analyzed the QB situation in Pittsburgh, she didn’t seem to be all in Allar after he only went 11 of 23 passing for 110 yards, saying he “failed to replicate his explosive preseason debut.”

Compared to another player Allar is competing against in former Ohio State QB Will Howard, he has looked to be the much better prospect. Howard struggled mightily against the Jets defense, throwing two interceptions and only had 74 yards passing on 15 attempts.

Mike McCarthy may not be impressed by either quarterback at the moment after both came down to earth, but it seems as if Allar is coasting on that one solid performance.

Against the Packers, Allar went 10 for 13 for 153 yards and two touchdowns, albeit against several backups. Howard merely looked serviceable, but perhaps didn’t get as many opportunities to impress, attempting only 9 passes.

Perhaps the third preseason game against the Buffalo Bills will further determine who’s ahead in the race to be QB2. For now, Allar must continue to show why the Steelers took a chance on him.
