The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has distanced itself from Archbishop Chivir Chianson and the group he represents over claims linking the association to a political mobilisation exercise in support of a candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The association said Chianson had been falsely presenting himself as its General Secretary and attempting to create the impression that CAN was involved in a purported church mobilisation for a political candidate.

In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN maintained that Chianson neither holds the position of General Secretary nor possesses the authority to speak or act on behalf of the organisation.

The association also clarified that the group represented by the cleric has no official affiliation, working relationship or institutional connection with CAN.

According to the statement, CAN has neither authorised nor endorsed Chianson or his group to organise, promote or participate in any political activity under its name.

It warned that any political endorsement, position or mobilisation attributed to the cleric or his associates should not be interpreted as the official position of the Christian body.

The association stressed that it would not allow individuals or groups without legitimate institutional connections to exploit its identity for political or personal interests.

CAN further emphasised its responsibility as the umbrella organisation representing Christians across Nigeria, noting that its mandate includes protecting the interests of the Christian community and contributing meaningfully to national development.

On the forthcoming 2027 general elections, the association reiterated its commitment to political neutrality, insisting that it would not endorse any political party or candidate.

It explained that although it would continue to participate in national conversations and hold political leaders accountable, such engagements would remain independent of partisan interests.

The statement added that CAN would assess national issues objectively and engage political officeholders regardless of their political affiliations.

The association consequently urged Christians and members of the general public to disregard any claims by Chianson or his group suggesting that they have official authority to represent CAN.

It also called on media organisations, particularly TVC News, to verify the credentials and institutional affiliations of individuals introduced as representatives of the association before granting them such recognition.

CAN said responsible reporting and proper verification were necessary to prevent unauthorised individuals from misleading the public about the organisation’s official positions.

The Christian body further warned that it would take all necessary measures to safeguard its name, identity and institutional integrity against misrepresentation and unauthorised use.

Reaffirming its position, CAN maintained that no individual or group without its official approval could speak for the association or use its name to advance political interests.
