Byrd’s Maxie sets record to lead this week's football roundups

Byrd senior running back Christian Maxie set a pair of school records, and a city record, despite his Jackets falling 44-37 to defending LHSAA Non-Select Division I Ouachita Parish in Monroe on the opening night of Louisiana high school football.

Maxie, who continues moving closer to becoming the school’s all-time rushing leader, rushed 40 times for 429 yards — both school records. The yards also set a Shreveport city record. The speedster scored three times and averaged 10.7 yards per carry in the contest.

Byrd (0-1) led for most of the first half behind the play of Maxie and quarterback Leo Ezernack, but the hosts built a 15-point fourth-quarter cushion and held on as Byrd scored with just over a minute remaining. The ensuing onside kick was reeled in by the Lions (1-0).

Calvary 48, Huntington 22: The Cavaliers (1-0) opened their 2026 campaign with a dominant win against Huntington (0-1) in the first game of the Stars and Stripes Border Classic, sponsored by the City of Shreveport. The event will conclude Friday with Parkway playing Dunham at 5 p.m. and Evangel testing West Monroe at 8 p.m. at Independence Stadium.

But Thursday belonged to Calvary and quarterback Hudson Price, who hooked up twice with Braylun Huglon and once with Levin Demoss as the Cavs built a big first-half lead and didn’t look back.

Green Oaks 44, Southwood 0: The Giants (1-0) showed they’re ready to be primetime players by scoring early and often against the Cowboys (0-1) in a rout.

St. Mary’s 22, Vidalia 6: The Tigers performed well in their opener under new coach Jacob Carruth.

Lincoln Prep 52, Delhi 12: The Panthers (1-0) got 258 yards of total offense and 5 TDs from Jabari Levingston to win handily. Aiden Ferguson led the Panther defense with 11 tackles, including two for a loss, and a sack against Delhi (0-1). Jakaylon Armstrong rushed 23 times for 160 yards and a pair of scores.
