BVB confirm horror injury: Giannis Konstantelias out for months

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed a serious injury to new signing Giannis Konstantelias, just one day after the Greek midfielder made an impressive Bundesliga debut.

The 23-year-old suffered an ACL tear in his left knee during Dortmund’s 2-0 victory over Hamburger SV on Saturday. The club confirmed on Sunday that Konstantelias will therefore be out for several months.

The injury puts a major dampener on what had initially been a dream Bundesliga debut for the summer signing from PAOK. Konstantelias impressed throughout the first half and scored Dortmund’s second goal shortly before the break, capping an excellent individual performance.

Shortly after the restart, however, Konstantelias went down following a challenge with HSV winger Bakery Jatta. The midfielder immediately grabbed his left knee and had to be substituted. Initial fears of a serious ligament injury were confirmed following further examinations.

The setback is particularly painful for Dortmund given the expectations surrounding Konstantelias. The Greek international only joined the club from PAOK earlier this month, signing a contract until June 2031.

The injury could also have an impact on Dortmund’s plans for the final days of the transfer window. With Konstantelias expected to miss several months, head coach Niko Kovač and sporting director Lars Ricken have indicated that the club will consider whether a replacement is necessary. However, no concrete decision has been made yet.
