The San Francisco Giants were trade deadline sellers this season, parting with rentals in Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray, as well as controllable players in Heliot Ramos and Erik Miller.

As they sold off a lot of talent, the Giants were also fielding offers on All-Star starting pitcher Logan Webb. Plenty of teams reportedly had a heated interest in him, including the Atlanta Braves, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

But the Giants didn’t trade him, and Nightengale shared the reason Buster Posey had for his decision to keep Webb, and Giants fans should like to hear this answer.

“He’s a guy that I think we all see as somebody that can mentor the next wave of pitchers that come through San Francisco,” Posey said. “And yes, I do think there’s still a chance, as bad as this year has been, that we can be a team that’s in contention.”

While the Giants might not have been all that great in 2026 through the deadline, there’s some hope for 2027 and beyond.

Webb is signed through the 2028 season on a five-year, $90 million contract. The Giants don’t want to trade him when he can be so impactful for this franchise for the next 2.5 seasons.

It’s not just about how he can help the Giants as a pitcher on the mound, but how he can help mentor the young pitchers coming up from the minor leagues in the future.

Posey is keeping Webb because he believes there’s a chance the Giants can compete next year and in 2028, and also to have the veteran ace help mentor the young pitchers in the organization.

Webb is a three-time All-Star and someone that the Giants should keep if they have any intention of competing over the next two seasons.

Trading him would signal a rebuild, and with Posey’s commentary explaining why they’re keeping Webb, it’s clear this team will try to contend in 2027 and beyond, while still looking to build a better future.
