BRYAN — The 7on7 state tournament opened Thursday morning for New Waverly, and after pool play, the Dogs are sitting towards the top.
New Waverly faced Rio Vista, Boling and Coahoma in pool play, finishing with a 2-1 record and a three-way tie. The Bulldogs will play as the second seed in the DIII tournament.
The Dogs opened against Rio Vista, where it came down to the final minute of play. New Waverly saw Rhyder Armstrong haul in a touchdown to put his squad ahead. New Waverly pulled out the 19-13 win against the Eagles.
Armstrong scored two touchdowns in the opening game.
Against Boling in the second game, it was all New Waverly from the jump. The Dogs hauled in a pick-six and had another interception that made it 20-0 quickly. New Waverly knocked off Boling 34-0 for a shutout in the middle game.
Rounding out pool play, New Waverly fell to pool winner Coahoma, 28-20 to end the day.
The loss will land New Waverly in an 8 a.m. matchup against Millsap. Tournament play begins at 8 a.m. and will be single elimination.
