Emiliano Buendia believes he “should have scored more” in Aston Villa’s “important win” over Viking in the Champions League.
Unai Emery’s side maintained their perfect start in the competition with a 3-1 win at Villa Park on Wednesday.
Villa are the first Europa League holders to win their first three games of a Champions League campaign since Manchester United in 2017-18.
They are also the second-quickest team to record 20 wins in the European Cup/Champions League (30 matches), behind only Real Madrid (29 matches).
Ross Barkley opened the scoring before Buendia scored a penalty before half-time, while an own goal from Henrik Heggheim secured the win before Peter Christiansen’s consolation for Viking.
Buendia is the first Villa player to score in four consecutive appearances in major European competition, and the first Argentinian to do so for a Premier League team since Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero in 2018-19.
However, Buendia recorded seven shots in the win, four of which were Opta-defined ‘big’ chances.
“I should have scored more; I had chances,” Buendia told TNT Sports. “I’m happy to score with the penalty [though].
“It was an important win, and we have to keep going.
“Obviously, these kinds of teams come here with all their energy, and they try and show their character.
“We respect them a lot; we worked, and we prepared the match really well. Then we showed that in the match.”

Alysson (20 years and 169 days) became the youngest Brazilian to take 3+ shots (three), create 3+ chances (three) and complete 4+ dribbles (four) in a Champions League match since Shakhtar Donetsk’s Willian (20y 109d) vs Basel in November 2008 (five, three and four).
And after assisting Barkley, Ibrahim Mbaye became the joint-youngest player to assist in consecutive Champions League appearances for a Premier League team, alongside Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere in September 2010 (18y 270d).
“He [Alysson] was incredible; he showed his potential, his ability on the wing,” added Buendia.
“Mbaye as well; their speed and qualities will help the team a lot.
“It’s very important to have them and try to improve, because they are young talents and can improve a lot.”
