Bowles had previously stated that “”Baker is the ultimate competitor, and the guys in our locker room feed off the energy, confidence and toughness he brings every day. He prepares the right way, holds himself accountable and is an unquestioned leader for our team,” per a statement released by the Buccaneers.

Mayfield was looking to enter a “prove it year” for the Buccaneers in 2026 had no deal come to fruition, with Tampa Bay still evidently on the fence as to whether or not he would be their starting quarterback over the long haul.

However, the answer to that question was a resounding yes, with the contract the team just paid him, and now, Mayfield can fully focus on the task at hand, which is leading the Buccaneers back into playoff contention after missing out on the big dance in 2025.
