The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a couple of weeks to their regular-season opener. That leaves Tampa Bay with roughly two-and-a-half weeks to manage any injuries before the regular-season opener. This reality drew widespread concerns after first-round pick Rueben Bain Jr. suffered a sprain during practice.

Fortunately, recent reports regarding Bain claim the Buccaneers have little to worry about. According to an NFL insider, the injury is considered “nothing serious,” and Bain is expected to be available when Tampa Bay opens the regular season against the Cincinnati Bengals next month.

Bain participated in Tuesday’s joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars before sitting out Wednesday’s session. While his absence naturally raised questions, the latest diagnosis on his AC joint sprain provides the Buccaneers with considerable relief, ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter reports.

AC joint sprains can be particularly uncomfortable for defensive linemen and linebackers because their positions require them to engage blockers and absorb contact with their shoulders. However, the current assessment suggests Bain should have enough time to recover.

The Buccaneers selected Bain with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft after an outstanding season at Miami. He joins Tampa Bay with significant expectations after establishing himself as one of the nation’s most disruptive defensive players.

Ahead of the new season, many expect Bain’s rookie role to include significant responsibility as part of a revamped Buccaneers defense. The team is counting on his explosiveness and ability to pressure quarterbacks to improve a pass rush that struggled to generate consistent disruption last season.

Bain’s rookie season will be one of the most closely watched storylines surrounding Tampa Bay’s defense. The Buccaneers did not select him in the top 15 simply as a developmental project. They expect his pass-rushing ability to translate quickly to the NFL.

His 2025 production at Miami gives the organization reason for optimism, but the transition to professional football means he’d have to chin up against tougher offensive linemen and more sophisticated blocking schemes.

For now, though, Tampa Bay can focus on the positive. Bain’s AC joint sprain does not currently appear to threaten his Week 1 availability. If he continues progressing over the next two weeks, the Buccaneers should have their first-round defensive centerpiece ready for September 13.
