Olympique de Marseille did everything to retain Igor Paixao (26) over the summer. Amid the club’s financial problems, the ownership looked to offload the Brazilian in the closing days of the transfer window, amid talks with Sunderland.
It was clear, however, that even the sale of the winger would not allow OM to recruit. Given the sales of other star players over the summer and the absence of incomings, Paixao was now the star of the team. Bruno Genesio and CEO Stéphane Richard pleaded with the ownership and got their way. Paixao remained, but at the start of the season he has struggled and now he could face a period on the sidelines.
The Brazilian went down in the first half of OM’s 2-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday night’s Classique at the Vélodrome. He was subsequently forced off, with Angel Gomes taking his place. Genesio provided an update on Paixao post-match. “I’ve not yet had an update, but it looks like it is [a problem with] his ankle,” said OM’s manager. Initially, it seemed to be the knee that was the issue.
