Browns QB competition: ‘Signal’ that ‘QB1’ has unofficially been identified
At this point in time, the Cleveland Browns quarterback competition is up in the air until HC Todd Monken says it isn’t. Deshaun Watson may have come in with a leg up, but Shedeur Sanders has reportedly made strides. Neither has seemed to distance themselves in the competition so far, almost two weeks into training, with Monken noting that finishing installs was a priority in the process.
In the end, everyone is trying to figure out what Monken is thinking and might prioritize. As an experienced coach, despite this being his first time as an NFL head coach, Cleveland fans are unlikely to get a straight answer until he wants the information out there. That leads everyone to try to look for clues.
The significant part about this practice is that Watson went first in two 7-on-7 periods and Sanders went second. Up until Day 8, the QB who’s serving as QB1 for the day has gone first in almost all of the 7-on-7s and 11-on-11s.
The fact that Watson got those extra first-team reps could signal that he’s about to unofficially move into the QB1 role and get the bulk of the starting snaps.
Monken noted on Wednesday that by Monday it should become evident who they’re planning to start at most of the key positions.

Cleveland’s head coach may enjoy watching media and fans argue over what is “evident” or not over the next few days of practice. Whether that means he will address it with the media on Friday or Saturday, we will find out.
Do you think Cabot’s notes are evidence of Watson taking the lead? When do you think Monken will actually announce the Browns starting QB?
