Brown basketball hires Stanford assistant as next head coach

Eric Reveno will be the next Brown men’s basketball head coach. 

ESPN reported late Thursday the Bears will hire Reveno, the associate head coach at Stanford, to replace the departed Mike Martin. A formal announcement is expected shortly. 

Reveno arrives with the Bears after spending the last two seasons at Stanford. He was the associate head coach with the Cardinal in the first year and added the title of general manager in the second. Stanford finished a combined 41-27 overall and went 20-18 in ACC play.

Reveno is the first new hire at Brown since Martin took command at his alma mater beginning in 2012-13. He left Brown earlier this month after accepting an assistant coach’s role at Michigan under Mike Boynton. Martin set a new program record with 171 wins, including a berth in the Ivy Madness title game against Yale at the close of the 2023-24 season. 

Reveno carries previous head coaching experience from Portland, and his teams reached the national top 100 six times in 3-point shooting. The Pilots collected three consecutive top-5 finishes from 2008-09 to 2010-11 and were a top-100 offense in each of those years according to KenPom.com, winning a combined 60 games. Portland ended 10-4 in league play during that middle season, the only time they’ve reached double-digit wins in conference action since at least the 1996-97 campaign.

Reveno is a Cardinal alum who joined the school’s staff for the first time in 1997 before eventually being hired away as the head coach with the Pilots. He closed 140-178 from 2006-16, including four CIT berths and a pair of 20-win seasons. Reveno was the Coach of the Year in the West Coast Conference in 2008-09, recognition in a league dominated at the time by Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s and BYU. 

Reveno was replaced by Portland alum Terry Porter prior to the 2016-17 season and return to staff roles as an assistant coach at Georgia Tech, an associate head coach at Oregon State and an associate head coach with the Cardinal. He spent the last two years in Palo Alto under Kyle Smith before being hired away to the Bears. 

Reveno becomes the fourth coach in the conference with ties to Smith, who was the head coach at Columbia from 2011-16. Jon Jaques (Cornell), Kevin Hovde (Columbia) and Brett MacConnell (Dartmouth) all previously worked for Smith, who is entering his third year at Stanford. Jaques is back at his alma mater with the Big Red while MacConnell will debut with the Big Green in 2026-27. 

Reveno was tabbed by athletic director Grace Calhoun and work from Parker Executive Search, a firm enlisted by Brown to identify outside candidates. The Bears gave associate head coach Tyson Wheeler an interim tag when Martin left for the Wolverines, the defending national champions. Boynton was elevated to replace Dusty May, who was hired away to the NBA by the Dallas Mavericks. 

Brown closed just 9-18 last season and finished last in the conference at 3-11. It proved tough sledding for Martin after a buzzer-beater defeat against the Bulldogs, 62-61, in the 2024 league championship game at Columbia. The Bears are set to return key players like Jeremiah Jenkins, Adrian Uchidiuno, Isaiah Langham, N’famara Dabo and Malcolm Wrisby-Jefferson.
