Broncos OLB Jonathon Cooper was arrested again

According to 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis, Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper was arrested once again late last night and is now facing multiple new charges against him. Cooper was arrested and booked last night on a charge of domestic violence and misdemeanor charges of harassment and violation of a protection order.

Cooper is scheduled to be in court at 8:30 this morning.

The Broncos released a statement saying: “We are disappointed to learn of Jonathon Cooper’s arrest on Thursday and continue to review this matter”. The league also commented on the matter by stating: “We continue to monitor all developments in the matter, which remains under review of the personal conduct policy.”

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton was asked on Thursday if he believes the league will be involved in this matter. Payton told reporters that he had a long visit with Cooper and now they’re waiting for the process to play out. He added that the league will be very much involved in this process, and they will wait and see what happens.

“I think this: I think the league has done a good job of kind of coming in and really taking over that responsibility. We had a long visit with ‘Coop’ (OLB Jonathon Cooper), and now the process plays out. The league obviously will be very much involved in that. We’ll stay abreast, but much like you all. I think that’s where it’s at. We just go from there.”

When asked if Payton has addressed the team about Cooper’s situation yet, he told reporters that he has not done that yet, but there will be a time next week during the minicamp meetings that it will be covered.

“I haven’t. My instincts told me not to right away. This time next week, we have three days of mini camp. We’ll have a number of speakers. I think there will be a time though to talk about it.”

Once again, I am no legal expert, but being arrested again, and now facing four new additional charges on top of the first arrest, is not good. You would have to assume the Broncos will be very disappointed about this, especially after Sean Payton stated he had a long talk with him this week. The league is also already reviewing this situation, and another arrest raises the odds of a possible suspension.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out moving forward. Obviously, it is disappointing that Cooper was arrested again, and hopefully, this is something he can finally put behind him moving forward. However, he could be facing some sort of punishment from the league due to multiple arrests and charges, and we do not know this current regime’s patience for things like this. Could they part ways with their starting edge rusher, or will they continue to let this process play out?
