Fabian Hürzeler questions Liverpool approach after Brighton suffer Anfield defeat

Fabian Hürzeler left Anfield convinced Brighton had missed an opportunity, arguing that only one side had truly sought to create during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory.

The Brighton manager’s pointed assessment followed a match settled by a Pascal Gross own goal and an Alexander Isak finish. His side had more possession and a higher expected goals tally, according to Beth Lindop’s report for ESPN, but Liverpool secured the points and a clean sheet.

Yet Hürzeler’s frustration came with an acknowledgement of what the hosts had done well. Liverpool protected their penalty area, blocked shots and made the decisive moments count. Those qualities helped Andoni Iraola’s team record a fourth consecutive victory in all competitions.

Hürzeler makes pointed claim over Liverpool approach

“I think everyone in the stadium saw that there was one team who really tried to create and try to win this game and therefore I have to praise my players,” Hürzeler said.

It was a forceful defence of Brighton’s performance, rather than a description Liverpool would necessarily recognise. The visitors’ possession and chances gave their manager grounds to feel disappointed, but they did not produce a goal.

Hürzeler also disputed the suggestion that Brighton only threatened once Liverpool had established their advantage.

“Also, before they scored, we had one, two big chances and today I think it was just the difference that they scored, we didn’t score.”

His argument centred on the opportunities Brighton failed to take. The outcome, in his view, did not reflect the promise of their attacking play.

Liverpool defending earns Brighton manager’s praise

Despite questioning Liverpool’s approach, Hürzeler was clear that their defensive work contributed to the result.

“They kept a clean sheet because they defended well with their centre-backs, with full-back Araujo and with Kerkez,” he said.

“I think they blocked a lot of shots. They really defended the box well.”

That acknowledgement adds important context to his broader criticism. Liverpool’s clean sheet was not presented simply as a fortunate escape. Hürzeler recognised the interventions that prevented Brighton from turning promising situations into goals.

Possession and expected goals help describe a match, but neither removes the importance of defending individual attacks. Blocking an effort or denying space inside the area can determine whether sustained pressure produces a breakthrough.

At Anfield, Liverpool combined those defensive actions with enough attacking efficiency to secure a clear advantage on the scoreboard.

Brighton mistakes deepen frustration over missed opportunity

Hürzeler also identified failings in his own team’s performance.

“We didn’t have that efficiency. We couldn’t keep the clean sheet because we made easy mistakes, we lost some important personal duels.”

Those admissions explain why his assessment was more nuanced than the opening remark alone suggested. Brighton created opportunities, but their manager accepted that shortcomings at both ends contributed to the defeat.

He nevertheless felt his players had remained committed to their intended approach.

“I saw a team that really had the belief in our approach, that stuck to the match plan, that always kept going,” he said.

“That is very frustrating because we all have the feeling that there is a missed opportunity here today.”

For Brighton, the task is to turn that belief into more effective execution. Their manager found encouragement in the performance, but the mistakes and missed chances carried a tangible cost.

Iraola credits strong start for fourth successive win

Iraola offered a different emphasis, highlighting Liverpool’s early aggression and their ability to threaten when possession changed hands.

“I’m very happy,” he said. “I’m happy with this fourth win.”

The Liverpool head coach acknowledged Brighton’s technical quality, comparing the challenge with the recent Champions League meeting against Villarreal. This time, however, his side avoided having to recover from conceding first.

“I think today the key was how we started. We needed a strong start, to be aggressive, recover balls, win our duels and be dangerous in transitions.”

“I think we did that and it’s been a different game to those where we conceded first.”

p style=”text-align:justify”>The result moved Liverpool into fourth place in the Premier League. Hürzeler saw chances Brighton should have taken; Iraola saw a plan that delivered another victory. Liverpool’s defending, acknowledged by both the scoreline and the opposing manager, was central to the difference.
