Brian Windhorst Makes Feelings Clear on Growing Giannis Antetokounmpo-to-Boston Speculation

Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s rumor mill seems to be heating up once more, and this time, the Boston Celtics seem to find themselves smack dab in the center of the commotion. With the Celtics’ unfortunate playoff exit coupled with the unclear future of the Bucks’ franchise player, there has been some discussion about how these two could work together. As discussions about the hypothetical trade become more popular, a rather refreshing opinion from NBA insider and ESPN expert Brian Windhorst brought us back down to Earth by reminding us that there were still some obstacles to overcome before a potential trade became a reality.
Trade Is Far From Reality

During an appearance with CLNS Media on June 7, Windhorst addressed the Celtics rumors and immediately pointed to the biggest issue facing any potential pursuit. While Boston may be one of several teams that would love to land Antetokounmpo, the insider stressed that player interest and long-term commitment matter just as much as trade assets.

“They want another star player who is younger and under contract control. That would fit Jaylen Brown…. When you talk Giannis you have to realize he has 1 year on his contract. He has to want to go to the place. He has to be willing to extend his contract. Is he willing to extend his contract with Boston? Unless the answer is yes, and Boston has to be willing to pay him…. Until I hear those two things, I can’t get that this is going down the track.”

The comment directly addresses one of the biggest assumptions behind the Celtics rumors, any realistic trade package would almost certainly begin with Jaylen Brown, who is coming off another All-NBA caliber season and remains one of the league’s premier two-way wings. Brown also fits the exact profile the Bucks would likely seek if it ever decides to move its franchise cornerstone, a younger star under long-term contract control.

That said, Windhorst made it clear that the conversation cannot advance unless Antetokounmpo signals genuine interest in the Celtics. Acquiring a player with only one guaranteed season remaining before a potential extension decision creates enormous risk. Teams are generally unwilling to surrender elite talent and draft capital without confidence that the superstar plans to stay.

The timing of the speculation is not surprising. Although Boston earned 56 victories during the regular season, their season went downhill when they failed to capitalize on a 3-1 series advantage during the first round of the playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers. Immediately following the end of the season, speculation about potential changes to the team started flowing out, with Antetokounmpo always at the center of all those suggestions.

However, according to numerous reports, the Miami Heat is still considered the frontrunner as long as the Bucks consider discussing trades with other teams. It looks like the Heat have always had plans involving Antetokounmpo, but in their case, the package would include Tyler Herro along with a combination of other young players and draft picks. Windhorst thinks that it’s all just talk for now until we know where Giannis wants to play.
