The Milwaukee Brewers have cut ties with an infielder acquired recently in a trade with the Houston Astros. 

The Brew Crew needed a roster spot to open following David Hamilton’s reinstatement from the injured list. 

On Friday, the NL Central club announced that infielder Braden Shewmake was designated for assignment. 

The 28-year-old was acquired from the Astros less than two weeks ago. He made it into four games with Milwaukee and had two hits in eight trips to the plate. 

“Shewmake’s past pedigree is stronger than his recent performance. He is a former first-round pick, selected 21st overall by Atlanta in 2019,” Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors wrote.

“He was considered to be a sure-handed infielder and a threat on the bases, but the bigger question was whether or not he would put on enough muscle to be any kind of threat at the plate.”

Despite the trade, Shewmake had the best offensive performance of his career with the Astros, posting a 92 OPS+ with three home runs and nine RBIs in 30 games. 

But Hamilton takes priority on Milwaukee’s roster. 

Shewmake spent spring training with the New York Yankees but was optioned to Triple-A and was traded to the Astros on April 19.
