The Los Angeles Dodgers, after relinquishing an early 4-0 lead, with the Milwaukee Brewers hitting a go-ahead home run in the top of the sixth courtesy of Garrett Mitchell, were knocking on the door. In the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, the Dodgers put the potential tying run on third base. However, the Brewers buckled down and stranded those runners, keeping them on top of the game heading into the top of the ninth.

The problem was that the Brewers have found it difficult to pad their lead. The Dodgers had Edwin Diaz on the mound, and he had retired six consecutive batters entering the ninth. Diaz then mowed down the Brewers’ first two hitters, sending David Hamilton to the plate with two outs in the inning.

Hamilton, to that point of the game, was 1-3 with an RBI. He only hit four home runs in the regular season. So to the surprise of many, the 29-year-old went yard, extending Milwaukee’s lead to 6-4, which would prove to be the final score.

The Dodgers certainly must have been caught off-guard, which was all according to plan for the Brewers. After all, manager Pat Murphy instructed Hamilton to bunt in his first at-bat, even with two outs. He would end up grounding out. This was so that he could lull the Dodgers’ pitchers into a false sense of security, as per Curt Hogg of Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He proceeded to drive in two runs for the Brewers in their biggest win of the season thus far.

This Brewers team has made a habit out of finding advantages everywhere they can. As Murphy said, they may not have the big names that the Dodgers do, but they have “gamers” who never shy away from the moment.

Milwaukee still may have won even without Hamilton’s solo shot, but having a two-run lead in the ninth had to have made Aaron Ashby that much more comfortable in recording the final three outs to complete the sweep.
