Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy spoke Tuesday about the Yankees remark that recently went viral, reflecting on his exchange with Jake Bauers during the club’s 2026 World Series festivities.
The conversation gained traction when video showed Murphy talking with Bauers shortly after Milwaukee secured the championship against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Brewers manager later revisited the exchange on the New York Post’s “The Show” podcast, where he joined hosts Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman.

During the championship celebrations, Murphy took a jab at Bauers’ former team, “Just remember when you were on that horses–t Yankees team and you guys were all playing for yourself?”
The comment came as Bauers was preparing to test the free-agent market after helping Milwaukee win the 2026 World Series.
Pat Murphy on his viral Yankees joke with Jake Bauers

Murphy added that he reached out to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman after the audio from the exchange surfaced publicly. He characterized their discussion as friendly and positive. The conversation with Bauers took place after Milwaukee defeated Tampa Bay 4-1 in Game 5, clinching the Brewers’ first World Series title in franchise history.
The Brewers manager’s exchange with Bauers was caught on a hot mic, bringing attention to his remarks about the first baseman’s time in New York. Bauers spent the 2023 season with the Yankees, making 84 appearances before the club ended the year at 82-80. Milwaukee later acquired him through a trade.

Murphy clarified that the comment stemmed from a running private joke he shared with Bauers about the free agency process. He explained that he brought up New York simply because Bauers had previously played for the Yankees, and admitted he wished the exchange had stayed private. His point was about how large player contracts can make it harder to keep a clubhouse united, not an attack on the Yankees’ 2026 team.
