The Milwaukee Brewers just won their first World Series game in 44 years, but Christian Yelich is not getting caught up in the moment. Yelich set the tone in Milwaukee’s 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 on Friday night at American Family Field.
Afterward, the longtime Brewers star made it clear the job is far from done.
“Obviously happy that we won, but got to lock back in tomorrow,” Yelich said, via Pat Timlin of WISN 12 News.

It was a fitting message from one of the faces of the franchise. Yelich has been a cornerstone in Milwaukee since arriving in 2018, when he won National League MVP honors in his first season with the club. Now, he is finally getting his shot on the sport’s biggest stage.
He wasted no time making an impact. With Jackson Chourio on base after a leadoff single in the first inning, Yelich lined a ball off Nick Martinez that sailed past center fielder Jonny DeLuca for an RBI triple. William Contreras followed with a single to bring Yelich home and give the Brewers a 2-0 lead.
That early cushion proved important. Jacob Misiorowski held the Rays to one run over five innings, and his very first pitch of the World Series was clocked at 103.5 mph, a record for the Fall Classic.
Tampa Bay had its chances, including a bases-loaded opportunity in the fifth, but could not break through. Chourio added an insurance run with an RBI single in the seventh.
The ninth inning got tense. Trevor Megill loaded the bases, and what looked like a game-ending double play was overturned on replay, allowing the Rays to score. Megill recovered, though, striking out DeLuca to seal the win.

The victory was Milwaukee’s first in the World Series since 1982, when the franchise fell to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. The Brewers have never won a championship, and neither have the Rays.
That history is exactly why Yelich wants his team to keep its focus. Game 2 is set for Saturday night in Milwaukee, where the Brewers will face Rays right-hander Drew Rasmussen with a chance to take a commanding lead before the series shifts to Tampa Bay.
