Brandon Woodruff had a 2.98 ERA through nine starts this season, but was once again battling injuries.
He missed all of 2024 and suffered an injury just before the start of last year’s postseason. He signed a qualifying offer with the Brewers last offseason, but missed over a month with a shoulder injury early in the year. After returning, he made just three starts before the Brewers placed him on the injured list again with a shoulder injury.
He was believed to need season-ending shoulder surgery, but in a twist, his shoulder showed healing in four weeks leading up to his decision to move forward with the surgery. He started a throwing progression, and on Sept. 15, he was throwing out to 105 feet. Now, a return in the late stages of October seems real.
“Brandon Woodruff said he’ll have more imaging of his shoulder on Friday before conferring with the doctors about whether to try throwing off a mound,” reported MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy on Wednesday.
Brewers Could Be Getting Two-Time All-Star
Woodruff would not be able to come back as a starter, but he would be a great arm to have out of the bullpen for the Brewers. He has pitched in big games and is a veteran who knows how to get outs. His velocity is not what it used to be before all of the injuries, but he showed this year that he can still be effective with his command.
His sub-3.00 ERA this year is no joke, and getting him in any capacity could be big for the Brewers. The Brewers already have a great bullpen, but adding Woodruff could give them one or two innings behind a starter to bridge the gap between the starter and Aaron Ashby, Abner Uribe and Trevor Megill.
Woodruff is still a ways out, and the Brewers would have to put him on a postseason roster without getting him any game action. It’s a risk, but he is the longest-tenured Brewer, and the team would be banking on his track record and resume.
