The Diamondbacks promoted infielder/outfielder Tim Tawa from Triple-A Reno on Sunday, July 5, clearing space by optioning infielder LuJames Groover.
Tawa has been back and forth a couple of times between the majors and Reno this season and has mashed during his time in the minors. In 88 plate appearances with Reno, he owns a .320/.409/.733 line with six doubles, two triples and seven home runs.
Manager Torey Lovullo gave Tawa the start on July 5 at third base but said he could factor into any number of positions going forward, including first base, at which the Diamondbacks have been desperate for production.
Lovullo, in recent days, has expressed a willingness to play the hot hand — or the “king of the court,” as he has put it — and as such, he has Ildemaro Vargas in the lineup for the third consecutive game. Vargas has gone 4 for 8 with a double and two RBIs over the past two days.
Lovullo is giving Pavin Smith the start at first base. Tawa is at third because Lovullo wanted veteran Nolan Arenado to get a day off to “recharge” ahead of the upcoming seven-game road trip. Ketel Marte is serving as the designated hitter.
As for Groover, Lovullo said he hopes the upcoming stint in Reno will give him a chance to “get his swing back,” and he expects Groover will be better prepared for the next time he is in the majors, not just in terms of the quality of competition but to be better acclimated to the idea of inconsistent playing time.
