Harrison Smith is returning to the Minnesota Vikings for the 2026 season, signing a one-year deal with the team where he has spent his entire NFL career.
NFL insiders Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo broke the news on Saturday evening, confirming that the legendary safety is signing a deal worth $12.25 million.
The deal also has playoff incentives that could increase its value to $16.25 million.
The possibility of Smith retiring after an illustrious 14-season career with the Purple was very real after the 2025 season, but the new season approached with no signal from the future Hall of Famer, indicating that a return was still on the cards.
The Vikings had signed free agent safety/linebacker Jamal Adams, only to see him suffer a season-ending injury in the Vikings’ first preseason game against the New York Giants.
Smith was the logical option to fill-in given his extensive knowledge of Brian Flores’ defense and the quality he could bring to the team even at the age of 37.
“It kind of felt like this was coming. If Smith was going to retire, he could’ve announced it after last season,” says Bring Me the Sports’ Vikings reporter Will Ragatz.
“In the end, with the season approaching, the draw of playing one more year with his teammates — taking one more crack at reaching the Super Bowl mountaintop — won out. This is a big addition for the Vikings’ defense. As we saw last season, Smith can still play at a high level while operating as the lead communicator in Brian Flores’ defense.”
This Vikings defense, which has finished top-3 in EPA/play two seasons in a row, looked awesome throughout training camp. Now Harrison Smith and Kyle Van Noy are aboard as the finishing touches, bringing all kinds of experience.
