The Philadelphia Phillies began the year 9-19, and have since been on a tear, returning to a postseason spot, and getting some incredible production from Cristopher Sanchez, Bryce Harper, and Kyle Schwarber.

But one of the more underrated players on the team this season has been Brandon Marsh. His .332 batting average is one of the best marks in the entire league, and he’s a legitimate All-Star candidate this season. He’s finally breaking out for the Phillies this season.

On Friday night against the Chicago White Sox, Matt Gelb of The Athletic shared that Marsh made some personal Phillies history with his game-tying home run that’s hard to believe is real.

“That was Brandon Marsh’s first home run against a left-handed starter since July 16, 2022. He played for the Angels then,” Gelb writes.

Facing left-handed White Sox starter Anthony Kay in the second inning with J.T. Realmuto on base, Marsh hit a home run to right-center field to tie the game at 2-2.

But that home run was the first home run for Marsh off a lefty starter since he joined the Phillies all the way back in 2022.

For the last four years or so, Marsh has not once hit a home run against a left-handed starting pitcher. While he’s not a power-hitter, he does have enough pop to get the ball over the fence semi-consistently.

This is some wild personal history for Marsh to make, but considering how much Rob Thomson was platooning Marsh since he came to Philadelphia, this hard-to-believe history does have some reason behind it.

For his career, Marsh is hitting .219 against left-handed pitching and .243 against left-handed lefty starters in his career. He has a .667 OPS against left-handed starters. But, this season, Marsh is hitting .328 against lefty starters and .277 off all lefty pitching.

His home run off Kay in the second inning of a June 5 game against the White Sox was his first home run off a left-handed starter since a July 16 homer four years ago, when he was still on the Angels.
