Bluesky now lets you upload 10-minute long videos

· · 1 min read

Social network Bluesky said on Tuesday that it is now increasing video limits on the platform to 10 minutes. Previously, the platform allowed three-minute-long videos, a limit that it raised last year. This makes it more competitive with other text-based platforms that by default allow for shorter video uploads

In addition to increasing the video length, the company said in a post that users can now upload a maximum file size of 300MB. Plus, it mentioned that upload speed is now 2x-3x faster.

The new limit is on par with TikTok’s limit of 10-minute videos recorded directly with the app. The change also means that other apps running on the AT Protocol that underpins Bluesky, such as Bluescreen, Reelo and Skylight, will also be able to serve longer videos

Social platforms have made concerted efforts to make their services video-friendly. Meta-owned rival, Threads, allows five-minute-long videos on its site.

While X lets free users upload 140-second videos, it has made it easier for paying users to upload 3-4-hour-long videos with sizes up to 16GB to increase video consumption on its network. The company also launched a new video editor to encourage users to upload original content on its platform.

With this move, Bluesky is attempting to increase its active user base, which has dropped by over 25% year-over-year as of July, as per data from Similarweb.
