As things currently stand, the Toronto Blue Jays should probably be buyers at the trade deadline. At 32-34, the Blue Jays haven’t played well and are still on the outside looking in in terms of a playoff spot, but there’s a lot of reason to believe that once this team is healthy, they’re going to be more than fine and things are going to go as planned.
The Blue Jays are only 0.5 games out in the American League Wild Card and are right in the mix to get back to where they were a year ago, so long as they get healthy.
It’s unfortunate that the Blue Jays have dealt with these injuries, which could force them to move on from some of their top players if things go off the rails over the next few months.
There are certain guys who would be more valuable than others to move on from, including right-hander Kevin Gausman.
Gausman has been great for the Blue Jays throughout the past five years, but the veteran is set to hit the free agency market at the end of next season, and as a result, could fetch Toronto a decent return. According to ESPN, he could be a guy who gets dealt.
“It seems unlikely, but factor in all the injuries and some of the surprising performances in 2025, and it’s not out of the question that the Jays just have one of those down years — similar to 2024,” David Schoenfield of ESPN wrote. “If that’s the case, Gausman could be the biggest target at the deadline.”
If Gausman ends up getting traded, and in the event that the Detroit Tigers don’t move on from Tarik Skubal and the New York Mets don’t trade Freddy Peralta, there might be a scenario in which Gausman is the best starter available. At that point, it might not be the worst idea for the Blue Jays to move on from him.
