It looked a simple enough play, a ground ball that was going to set up a double play.
But as Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson fielded the ball and went to tag Toronto Blue Jays runner Ernie Clement, the oncoming Clement veered toward the outfield, away from the tag.
Henderson fired to first base for an out, and the Orioles assumed Clement would get called out for leaving the baseline.
The umpires instead let Clement stay at second base.
The crew chief even called Clement “gentlemanly” for his maneuver after the game.

The key to a runner being in the baseline is that the runner himself establishes the path. And the path can’t officially be established until the fielder has the ball.
The umpires essentially ruled that Clement had already started to veer wide before Henderson got the ball. That’s a bang-bang timeline if you watch the play back.
Clement likely had the idea, but the actual execution of it wasn’t super early.
To say it’s “gentlemanly” is odd, because Clement clearly wasn’t just avoiding a throw — he was trying to avoid a tag.
Whether he did it early enough to actually establish a basepath over there is the only thing up for interpretation.
The Orioles probably aren’t going to all of a sudden agree that Clement was just being chivalrous here.
