Bloodborne Gets PS1 Treatment In New Steam RPG You Can Try Free
A new RPG on Steam has essentially given Bloodborne a PlayStation 1 treatment, and if you’re a fan of soulslike games in general or retro-coded titles from the early 3D era, you won’t want to miss this one. Now is a great moment to check out the platform if you’re looking for something new. With the ongoing Steam Next Fest, there are several free demos on Steam that you should try, including some pretty noteworthy RPGs that have not been fully released but are in the pipeline. Among these new RPGs is one that immediately stands out among the rest.
While the full game has not yet been released and is expected to arrive on January 27, 2027, a new soulslike game by the name Prison of Husks has had its demo released for free on Steam. There are no strings attached. All you have to do is access its product page, check if your hardware is compatible, download the free demo, and start playing. The demo is relatively short, lasting about an hour if you explore every nook and cranny in the currently available content, but it is worth your time.
The soulslike’s free demo on Steam covers the first level of the game and the boss fight that concludes the area – depending on how much you explore and unlock shortcuts, the more time you’ll spend with it. Developed by Glass Head Dolls and published by the studio in collaboration with Wings, Prison of Husks is an indie soulslike RPG. The game is set in Lysiane, described as an “afterlife painted by the hand of a pure heart.” In it, you control a doll who explores this desolate world.
What immediately stands out about Prison of Husks is that it is clearly inspired by nostalgic PS1 graphics, with its low-poly designs and gritty color palette. The game even runs on a 4:3 aspect ratio, helping the nostalgia come to life. Applied to the oppressive world of a soulslike, Prison of Husks already feels like a marvel. What makes this game feel like Bloodborne, however, is not only the fact that it’s a soulslike, but that it is steeped in gothic terror ambiance.

The main character in the game can wield different types of weapons and will even have access to magic and firearms. Another important gameplay element in Prison of Husks is how relevant parrying is, since it creates better opportunities to strike enemies. On top of that, the game also encourages combat with an adrenaline system, which works differently from the rally system seen in Bloodborne, but effectively makes you want to keep on attacking.
Even though the demo is relatively short, Prison of Husks was quite a pleasant surprise to me. Soulslike games that try to copy the FromSoftware formula don’t always quite hit the spot, but this indie game tries to feel different, even if it is clearly inspired by some of the greats. It’s unclear what the full game will look like when it arrives in January, but I’m particularly excited about the potential of this nostalgic RPG that you can try out for free on Steam right now.
