Black Doves Season 3: Renewal Status & Everything We Know

· · 5 min read

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Black Doves season 2.Netflix’s spy thriller Black Doves only just ended its second season, but many viewers are likely already wondering if the story of Keira Knightley’s Helen Webb will continue in season 3. There’s already a lot of hype surrounding Black Doves season 3. That’s partly due to the rave reviews for Black Doves season 2 and partly due to the very open-ended finale of Black Doves season 2.

Black Doves has been a critical and popular darling since it began, and there’s still plenty of room to explore Helen’s story, so season 3 should be a no-brainer. Despite its popularity and success, the fate of Black Doves season 3 is still undecided. There are, however, a few hopeful indications that Netflix is going to make the right decision and renew Black Doves for another outing.

Netflix Hasn’t Confirmed Black Doves Season 3

At the time of writing, Netflix has not yet officially confirmed Black Doves season 3. That’s not a very discouraging development, as streaming services typically take weeks or months to issue a series renewal. It is, however, a bit unusual for Black Doves specifically. Black Doves season 2 was confirmed even before the first season premiered back in December 2024. It seems season 3 didn’t get the same early vote of confidence, and it’s possible that Netflix wants to look at critical reception and viewership numbers before deciding whether to renew or cancel the series.

It is worth noting that Netflix’s official ending explainer for Black Doves season 2 does explore what’s next for the Black Doves following this season’s reveals (via Tudum). While that’s nowhere near an official renewal, it is a promising sign that Netflix is willing to renew the show for a third season and is already trying to drum up intrigue for some new plot lines. For now, however, the fate of Black Doves season 3 is unconfirmed.

Unfortunately, even if Black Doves season 3 is confirmed soon, this delay may have some implications for when it could be released on Netflix. Black Doves season 2, despite being renewed before season 1 even began, took nearly two full years to premiere. Since production on season 3 hasn’t even begun yet, it may take even longer than season 2 did. So much is still up in the air, but Black Doves season 3 may not arrive on Netflix until 2028 or potentially later, if it happens at all.

What Black Doves’ Creator Has Said About A Potential Season 3

Though the show hasn’t been officially renewed yet, Black Doves showrunner Joe Barton has already hinted that he has plans for a third season. In an interview with Esquire, Barton said that he wants to have Tom Hanks and Elliot Page guest star in Black Doves season 3. While it’s not exactly a confirmation that the script has been written, Barton’s comments indicate that he at least has some idea of the story Black Doves season 3 could take.

Additionally, Barton also hinted at Helen’s future during his interview with Netflix (via Tudum). In that interview, Barton mentions that Helen will likely go through an “evolution” as a character, and that her only path forward is to get even more involved in the Black Doves organization. Clearly, Barton has ideas about how to continue the story of Black Doves, even though Netflix hasn’t given the official order yet.

How Black Doves Season 2’s Story Sets Up Another Season

One of the strongest pieces of evidence suggesting that Black Doves could be renewed for a third season is the ending of the second season. The finale of Black Doves season 2 left the door wide open for another season to pick up where it left off. It is by no means a definitive ending to Helen’s story or the tale of the Black Doves as an organization; on the contrary, it actually seems Black Doves season 2 is an expansion of the show.

The clearest way Black Doves season 2 has expanded the series is through Kestrel, the new anarchist covert organization that stands opposed to the Black Doves. Though Katia, aka Vita, died at the end of season 2, Patrick was able to escape alive. He even delivered a calling card to Helen, which Reed smartly deduced was a warning that Kestrel had not been destroyed and could still pose a major threat. Reed also explained that Patrick had been seen boarding a plane to Tokyo, presumably to resume Kestrel’s operations in the wake of Vita’s death.

Kestrel presents a perfect story for Black Doves season 3 to explore. The next season could follow Helen and Reed tracking down Kestrel and trying to thwart their future actions across the globe. Kestrel also presents an opportunity to get government intelligence organizations, like the CIA and MI6, involved, as the U.S. and U.K. likely want revenge for Kestrel’s attack on the peace summit. In short, Black Doves has set itself up very nicely to continue its story in season 3, even if that third season hasn’t yet been confirmed.
