Bills news: Lions blitzed Josh Allen at will in Week 2, and it backfired spectacularly appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Lions’ defensive game plan didn’t work all that well against a red-hot Josh Allen. In the Lions’ 41-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills, they deployed a strategy against Josh Allen that focused on pressuring him in his dropbacks. Per Next Gen Stats data, the Lions doubled the blitz on Allen 55.3% of his dropbacks in the Thursday night matchup. That blitz rate was the highest under Lions defensive coordinator Kevin Shepard.
But despite the pressure they tried to put on Allen in the passing game, he found a way to succeed. Allen went 12-for-17 for 137 yards and two touchdowns against the Lions’ blitzing scheme. Allen also used his legs, logging five scramble runs for 49 yards and a touchdown. Allen also converted all four of his QB sneaks, with one turning into a touchdown. Allen’s phenomenal game in prime time against the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football is the latest addition to an already stellar start to the season for the former MVP.
In the Bills’ win over the Houston Texans, who boast one of the NFL’s best defenses, Allen threw for 334 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 23 yards on six carries and scoring two touchdowns with his legs. His performance against the Texans earned an MVP endorsement from new CBS NFL analyst Russell Wilson.

Wilson said on the Set, Hut podcast that he predicts Allen will be named MVP.
“Will Josh Allen win his second MVP? I think that he has a definite chance to win it, and I’m calling out that he’s probably gonna win it this year because I think he knows it’s time for the Buffalo Bills. New stadium, all things new. New coach. You know, obviously the coach had been with him in Joe Brady, but I think it’s gonna make a difference this year.”
