Big question facing Colts wide receiver position heading into minicamp

Mandatory minicamp will take place for the Indianapolis Colts from June 9-11. This is often the last big milestone in the NFL offseason calendar before training camp arrives in late July.

Through the first two weeks of OTA practices, we’ve gained some valuable insights into where things stand on the depth chart, along with who may be standing out early on, but questions at each position group remain, and that’s normal at this time of the year. It won’t be until training camp and the preseason take place that playing time and final roster decisions are made.

So as part of our Colts‘ minicamp preview, let’s highlight the one big question facing each position group. Next up are the wide receivers.

go about replacing Michael Pittman’s production?

Pittman’s departure leaves a lot of lost production that has to be replaced. Last season, Pittman led the team in targets with 110, and he was first in receptions with 80 and totaled 784 receiving yards with a team-high seven touchdowns, per PFF.

Competing for that now vacant starting role alongside of Alec Pierce and Josh Downs will be Ashton Dulin, Laquon Treadwell, Deion Burks, and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine. However, none of these players are expected to replicate Pittman’s production on their own — it will be a group effort.

While there will be a starter at the top of the depth chart, the Colts could go with a rotation at the WR3 spot, with the matchups and in-game situations dictating who is on the field.

Absorbing Pittman’s absence will also extend to Pierce, Downs, and tight end Tyler Warren, not only with more opportunities but in how they are utilized within the offense.

This could be the plan on paper, but now the Colts’ offense has to go out and execute on it.
