Big 12 files lawsuit, claims Texas Tech football plans to play Brendan Sorsby | Report

The Big 12 Conference is the latest entity to file legal action in the Brendan Sorsby saga.

The conference filed a lawsuit in federal court in Dallas on Monday looking to receive a declaratory statement that the Big 12 is allowed to punish Texas Tech if the football team does play Brendan Sorsby, multiple outlets reported.

While Texas Tech has not said publicly if it will actually play Sorsby this season after the Cincinnati transfer quarterback received an injunction last week to remain eligible, The Athletic reports that the court filing states Texas Tech has told the Big 12 that “Texas Tech has communicated to the league its intent to play Sorsby in conference football games, while the league has asked it not to do so.”

The Big 12 is citing the First Amendment for its ability to punish Texas Tech. Last week, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton set notice to the conference that any sanctions against the Red Raiders would be met with legal action from the state.

Texas Tech University chancellor Brandon Creighton, president Lawrence Schovanec, athletic director Kirby Hocutt and Paxton are all listed as defendants in the lawsuit while Sorsby is not.

The lawsuit states that potential punishments for Texas Tech includes a postseason ban and loss of revenue earned from the conference.
