Television has had many great fantasy shows over the last 15 years, some of which are based on books, including Game of Thrones, His Dark Materials, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Wheel of Time, Outlander, The Magicians, The Legend of Vox Machina, The Mighty Nein, and the Game of Thrones spinoffs House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The genre also has another major adaptation on the way with Prime Video’s Fourth Wing series, starring Esther McGregor as Violet Sorrengail and Emilio Sakraya as Xaden Riorson.
The Faithful and the Fallen author John Gwynne has now announced (via Josh Smith on Instagram) that a television adaptation of his epic fantasy book series is now in development. No other details have been provided as of this writing. Check out the announcement below:
Gwynne’s The Faithful and the Fallen is a bestselling series consisting of the books Malice, Valor, Ruin, and Wrath, which were published from 2012-2016. They begin with a blacksmith’s son named Corban, who aspires to become a soldier for King Brenin. He becomes embroiled in a prophecy that also involves the skilled swordsman Verandis, King Brenin’s chief counselor Evnis, and Prince Nathair.
Along with being a bestseller, Malice has four and a half out of five stars on Amazon and a 4.2 rating on Goodreads. British author Conn Iggulden described Malice as “influenced by Gemmell’s Rigante and George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones … Hell of a debut.” Kirkus called it a “Middle Earth-ish extravaganza with all the usual thrills, chills, spills and frills … there’s plenty of action.”

In addition to The Faithful and the Fallen, Gwynne is the author of the Of Blood and Bone epic fantasy series, which includes A Time of Dread, A Time of Blood, and A Time of Courage. This was followed by The Bloodsworn Saga, an epic fantasy trilogy featuring The Shadow of the Gods, The Hunger of the Gods, and The Fury of the Gods.
With no details yet other than The Faithful and the Fallen being in development, it’s too soon to know who will produce the show, where it will be released, who other than Gwynne will be involved, and if it will be animated or live-action. How much creative control the author has will also be an important matter, especially after Brandon Sanderson’s Apple TV deal, in which he remains the lead creative of adapting Mistborn into movies and The Stormlight Archive into a television series.

Considering that Game of Thrones, His Dark Materials, Outlander, and The Magicians have all completed their adaptations, The Wheel of Time is canceled, and House of the Dragon season 4 and The Legend of Vox Machina season 5 are ending their respective series, it is an arguably promising time for The Faithful and the Fallen to be going into development. That being said, it will still have to compete with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, The Mighty Nein, The Rings of Power, and Fourth Wing, among other adaptations in the genre.
Despite comparisons to Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings, The Faithful and the Fallen also offers its own unique take on epic fantasy, which can be further showcased by the television adaptation based on Gwynne’s bestselling novels.
