Bergvall says Spurs ‘building something great’ after signing new contract

Lucas Bergvall is sure Tottenham are “building something great” after penning a new contract with the club.

The Swedish midfielder was strongly linked with an exit in the recent transfer window, with Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United touted as possible suitors after he expressed interest in a move.

Bergvall eventually stayed put, though he has been restricted to just 45 minutes off the bench amid a dire start to the Premier League season for Roberto De Zerbi’s men.

Going into Saturday’s clash with Everton, Spurs have just one point on the board and are yet to score after three matches. They have never started a campaign with four goalless games in their league history.

But Bergvall – who has made 80 appearances overall for Spurs since arriving from Djurgarden in 2024 – is excited for what the future holds.

“I think we’re building something great here. It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract,” the 20-year-old told Spurs’ website.

“I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.

“Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can.

“I’m getting better every day in training and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”

“I think we’re building something great and we just need to stay calm and keep believing in what we’re doing.”

While Bergvall has committed his long-term future to Spurs, with the club not confirming the exact length of his new deal, Richarlison’s future remains unclear.

The Brazilian was left out of Spurs’ Premier League squad after seeing a potential return to Everton collapse on deadline day, and reports state he is keen to tear up the remaining nine months of his contract.

Asked to provide an update on Richarlison’s situation, De Zerbi said: “I don’t know. It’s not my job.

“What l can say, is that I know very well what the club has done for Richarlison, and very well what Richarlison has done for the club in the last two months.

“I know, he knows, the club knows, his agent knows. Everyone knows, better than you [the media]. Much better.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s clash with Everton, De Zerbi revealed loanee Mykhailo Mudryk would be absent due to a “stupid” injury.

The Ukraine international made his Tottenham debut in their 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest last time out, having only recently been cleared to return to action after the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned his anti-doping ban.

“It’s a stupid injury. We need him back as soon as possible,” De Zerbi said of the winger. “For him, he’s suffered too much, and for us because he’s an important player for us.”

Spurs are one of three teams yet to score in the Premier League this season, along with Aston Villa and Coventry City, with this the first campaign in the competition to feature as many as three goalless sides after three matchdays.
