Beggars will lead revolution if Nigerians stop giving them alms — Seun Kuti

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has claimed that the practice of giving alms to street beggars is delaying the revolution that would bring about positive change in Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview with ObjecTV, Kuti claimed that because Nigerians are constantly giving alms to beggars, they are not “hungry” enough to spark a revolution.

He argued that beggars are supposed to be angry enough to “cause” a revolution, but the alms they receive from Nigerians are pacifying them.

“The beggars are the ones who are supposed to be angry in order to cause revolution, but since we give them money from time to time, they are not hungry enough to be angry,” he stated.

His statement elicited mixed reactions on social media, with many pointing out that “being uncharitable to beggars” is not enough to cause a revolution.

Kuti has repeatedly advocated for a revolution in Nigeria over the years, stressing that the present crop of politicians is “corrupt.”
