Bayern Munich just couldn’t stop making mistakes in 2-2 draw with FC Augsburg

Bayern Munich put a scare into fans by giving up a goal just eight seconds into the match, and that would be a harbinger of things to come as the German Rekordmeister scuffled to a 2-2 draw with FC Augsburg.

Just moments into the game, FC Augsburg was on the scoreboard. During the opening kickoff, the ball was played straight back to Manuel Neuer, who took a massive touch. As he scrambled to get to the ball, the veteran goalkeeper did manage to get off a clearance attempt, but it drilled Robin Fellhauer, who charged forward, gathered in the ricochet, and calmly deposited the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Bayern Munich, though, was not just going to quit, but would be unable to really take over the game due to a litany of mistakes. Vincent Kompany’s squad was relentless with its attack and put a ton of pressure on Die Fuggerstädter, but was consistently firing off-target. When shots did go on frame, they were not as dangerous and were easily handled by FC Augsburg’s standout goalkeeper, Finn Dahmen.

Just before halftime, Harry Kane had a golden opportunity to knot the match, but sent his close-range attempt off the crossbar. For Bayern Munich fans thinking this game was cursed, that was not going to make any of them feel better.

Things did improve in the second half (despite a broadcast outage in the United States). Luis Díaz looked like he scored a goal, but it was subsequently ruled offside by VAR. Still, that represented some positive momentum. Moments later, Ismael Saibari knotted the game at 1-1.

FC Augsburg would not wait long to respond, though. Rodrigo Ribeiro took advantage of some lax pressing from Josip Stanišić in the build-up and transition, as he scored on a rebound for a 2-1 lead just nine minutes after Saibari’s goal. The entire Bayern Munich backline was subpar on the play, and it could be argued that Neuer could have done far better to control the ball.

All of a sudden, Bayern Munich was trailing 2-1 and needed to make something happen. Again, though, Bayern Munich was killing itself with mistakes as Kane went offside to nullify another goal. Minutes later, Alphonso Davies went offside to kill another would-be goal.

Simply put, Bayern Munich was destroying itself with mistakes. In all, Bayern Munich had three goals disallowed.

Finally, though, Bayern Munich would not step on itself. In the 80th minute, right-back Nathaniel Brown snuck in behind FC Augsburg left-back Hennes Behrens and got on the end of a pass from Kane to make it 2-2. Three minutes later, an attempt from Serge Gnabry clanged off the post to keep the match tied.

Clearly, Bayern Munich was peaking in an attempt to claw out an improbable victory after a game of missed chances, but nothing else would find the back of the net for either team as the game ended in a draw.
