India joined South Africa as the team with the most 400-plus totals in ODI cricket after piling up 402 against Afghanistan in the second ODI of the three-match series at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday.
It was the eighth time India had crossed the 400-run mark in ODIs, drawing level with South Africa at the top of the list. England have achieved the feat seven times, while Australia have done it three times.
Most 400-plus totals in ODIs
India’s total was built around captain Shubman Gill’s 154 off 110 balls and Ishan Kishan’s 125 off 79 deliveries. The pair added 224 runs for the third wicket after India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal early.
Asked to bat first, India lost Jaiswal when Mohammad Saleem Safi struck in his opening spell. Gill then joined Rohit Sharma, who looked set for a half-century before Rashid Khan dismissed him for 48. Rohit hit six fours and two sixes during his stay.
Kishan arrived at No. 4 and quickly settled into his innings. Gill reached his fifty with a six off Nangeyalia Kharote, while Kishan brought up his half-century in the 28th over. The left-hander then accelerated sharply, reaching his century after scoring 53 runs in just 19 balls following his fifty.
The landmark moment came in the 33rd over when Gill completed his ninth ODI century, his first since becoming India’s full-time ODI captain. Later in the same over, Kishan also reached three figures, bringing up his second ODI hundred.
The partnership finally ended in the 37th over when Kharote dismissed Kishan for 125, an innings that included 14 fours and seven sixes.
Gill continued to dominate and crossed 150 in the 42nd over before falling for 154. His innings featured 22 fours and two sixes. Shreyas Iyer added 26, while Washington Sundar’s 19 helped India cross the 400-run mark.
India were eventually bowled out for 402 in 49.5 overs, becoming the first team in ODI history to score 400-plus runs and still be dismissed before completing the full 50 overs.
For Afghanistan, Kharote claimed four wickets, Rashid Khan took three, while Allah Ghazanfar and Safi picked up one wicket each.
The total was also India’s highest ODI score against Afghanistan and the second-highest ever recorded against them.

India came into the match with a 1-0 lead in the series and needed a win in Lucknow to secure the contest, while Afghanistan required victory to keep the series alive.
