The New York Jets got some rough news on Tuesday, as it was announced that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed Baker Mayfield to a three-year extension. Some reports indicated the Jets would be interested in Mayfield if he hit the open market next year, and that would have made plenty of sense.

Mayfield is the type of guy who would fit in well in New York if he played at the level everybody knows he can, even if there was some downside to that.

While that seems like a difficult reality, others don’t think it’s that bad. In fact, one Jets reporter essentially thinks that the Jets got off easy here. He believed New York has to evaluate all its options, and if it had just gone out and signed Mayfield, it might not have done that.

“If the Jets had signed Mayfield in free agency next year, would that have been a mistake? Maybe, but it’s all about options.

“The more options the Jets have at QB, the more likely they are to solve their woes. They owe it to themselves to explore every possible avenue: free agency, trade, and the upcoming draft,” Paul Esden wrote.

I agree with what Esden is saying here.

With all the assets the Jets have, there’s no reason why they can’t find the quarterback of the future. That’s ultimately something New York has to figure out, and it hasn’t yet, but there’s even a scenario where Geno Smith can be the guy and the Jets don’t have to go out and land a quarterback.
