Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Unveils All 3 Captain Americas Together For The First Time In Awkward Meeting

Marvel Studios’ latest Avengers: Doomsday trailer has revealed a hilarious but awkward situation involving the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s three Captain Americas. With Chris Evans returning as Steve Rogers, Anthony Mackie continuing as Sam Wilson, and Wyatt Russell reprising his role as John Walker, the upcoming blockbuster will feature three men who have carried the iconic superhero mantle at one point.

The new footage revealed a humorous interaction involving Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang, better known as Ant-Man. In the clip, Scott addresses Steve Rogers as “Cap,” seemingly forgetting that he is no longer the official Captain America. Sam Wilson, who currently holds the title, gives Scott a look, prompting him to awkwardly correct himself by clarifying who the current holder of the mantle is. Although the interaction is brief, it nods to a situation that a number of viewers have been talking about. The conversation was initially created by Steve’s return. Audiences wondered what kind of role Evans would play now that the shield has been passed down to Mackie’s character. The lighthearted moment in an otherwise dark trailer provided more insight into how Marvel Studios will handle the three heroes in Avengers: Doomsday.

While the new preview specifically highlights Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson, Avengers: Doomsday also refreshed fans’ memories about a lesser-known Captain America in the MCU. John very briefly served as Captain America in Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Following Steve’s retirement, Sam initially gave the shield to the Smithsonian, only for the government to appoint Walker as his replacement.

Walker’s time as the hero ended after he killed a member of the Flag Smashers. As a result, he was stripped of the mantle. He eventually became a member of the Thunderbolts, which was later rebranded as the New Avengers.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday will bring together characters from across multiple Marvel franchises as they confront Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. The film will also feature a massive ensemble cast, including returning actors who starred as members of the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and the New Avengers.

Avengers: Doomsday will see the returns of the MCU’s Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Letitia Wright (Shuri), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), and Danny Ramirez (Falcon). It will also star the X-Men from the original film franchise, with Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), James Marsden (Cyclops), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) reprising their roles.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
