Attack On Titan Meets Avatar In Paramount+'s New Fantasy Series

Paramount+’s new fantasy series is blending two great franchises, Attack on Titan and Avatar. When looking at the ever-increasingly popular world of animation, certain anime shows always pop up. Attack on Titan is one such show and is widely regarded as one of the best anime ever made. Beyond that, Attack on Titan is a rare anime show that managed to transcend its target audience, becoming one of the more mainstream properties in the genre.

Because of this, the show is not only regarded as one of the best Eastern animated shows, but one of the greatest animated TV shows in history. Another show that joins Attack on Titan on this list is Avatar: The Last Airbender. Be it the original story or its sequel, The Legend of Korra, many shows in the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise are beloved, even decades after their respective releases. In recent years, both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra have found success on streaming platforms like Netflix, much like Attack on Titan continues to do on its respective streamers.

Interestingly, a new fantasy show on Paramount+ is blending the Avatar franchise with that of Attack on Titan. A sequel to The Legend of Korra, Avatar: Seven Havens takes the world, power set, and lore of the franchise and puts it in a unique story, though one with some similarities to Attack on Titan. The former focuses on Pavi and Nisha, two young Avatars from Ellora, one of the titular havens that protects humanity from the wildlands beyond their walls, caused by a devastating cataclysm two centuries before Avatar: Seven Havens’ timeline.

Thanks to this premise, the similarities to Attack on Titan become clear. For one, both shows feature a safe haven for humanity behind giant walls, with dangerous lands and predators lurking beyond. At the centre of both stories is a giant mystery: how did the world become what it was? In Attack on Titan, the main characters team up with the military factions of that story to find out, much like Pavi and Nisha are doing with members of Avatar: Seven Havens’ Bending Brigade.

In both shows, the mysterious past is key to unlocking the secrets of the world. Attack on Titan eventually reveals the lineage of the titular titans, how that ties to the current main characters, and what that means for the show’s endgame. In Avatar: Seven Havens, the same is expected via the role of Avatar Korra, Pavi and Nisha’s predecessor, who supposedly destroyed the world and caused the cataclysm. In these ways, Attack on Titan and Avatar: Seven Havens share many aspects, blending the two franchises in Paramount+’s excellent fantasy series.

Avatar: Seven Havens Is A Perfect Mystery Box Show

Although these comparisons could cause some to view Avatar: Seven Havens as inferior to Attack on Titan, it helps that the former is a genuinely great mystery box show. The best of these kinds of stories, like Attack on Titan itself, have huge mysteries at their center and slowly unravel them over time. However, to work over sustained seasons of TV, the writing has to make audiences care about the characters and the storylines that face them before uncovering the big mysteries of the world. Thus far, Avatar: Seven Havens is doing exactly that.

The worldbuilding of Ellora has been excellent, and it is endlessly intriguing to see this world in such a different light after The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. The characters are also piquing interest, be it the added mystery of Pavi and Nisha’s origins, their status as dual-Avatars, Karthik’s journey with the White Lotus, and Jae’s maturation as a mentor to the young protagonists. This is all blended with a clash with bandits named the Faceless, the political tensions between the Seven Havens, and the mysteries at the show’s center, proving Avatar: Seven Havens a perfect mystery box.

Avatar: Seven Havens Can Learn From Attack On Titan’s Plot

One way in which the comparisons between Attack on Titan and Avatar: Seven Havens can help the latter is by following the former’s format. At four seasons long, Attack on Titan expertly positioned its central mystery as the key to everything. However, over the course of the first three seasons, countless new questions and secrets were raised, meaning audience interest was retained despite the central mystery not being answered for almost three full seasons. The sporadic raising of questions and subsequent answers that repeated worked brilliantly to leave viewers always wanting more.

To work for the entirety of its recently confirmed four-season run, Avatar: Seven Havens must do the same. Revealing the key to its central mystery too early would risk being disappointing, leaving the rest of the show beyond it feeling underwhelming. Instead, like Attack on Titan, Avatar: Seven Havens should focus on smaller mysteries along the way, revealing tidbits, and then raising even more speculative questions. It has done so thus far with plots concerning the Faceless and the other Havens, but it will need to continue doing so if Avatar: Seven Havens wants to truly stand alongside Attack on Titan.
