Per the MLB transactions log, the Atlanta Braves made a trade with the Los Angeles Angels late on Wednesday night. The news surfaced on Thursday when the Braves designated catcher Chadwick Tromp for assignment, which was the team’s corresponding move for bringing in 8-year MLB veteran catcher Austin Wynns.

Austin Wynns, 35, has played for the Baltimore Orioles, San Francisco Giants, Athletics (2025 and 2026), Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies, and Los Angeles Dodgers

The Angels signed him to a minor league deal a few weeks ago, but he never appeared in a game with Los Angeles this season. Over 39 at-bats with the Athletics this season, Wynns posted an uninspiring.077 batting average with no extra-base hits. The Angels received Cash for Wynns, who doesn’t figure to have a long-term stay in Atlanta.

MLBTR.com’s Steve Adams grabbed a piece of this news, and had to say about what it means for the Braves:

More Hot Update :  Eli Junior Kroupi helped Arsenal to the title – could he be set to sign for them next?

“Wynns has suited up for the Reds, A’s, Orioles, Giants, Dodgers and Rockies, compiling a lifetime .231/.276/.347 slash line in 826 big league plate appearances (293 games). That’s obviously below average but far better than the typical levels of offensive output from Tromp and fellow catcher Sandy Leon, who’ll split time with Wynns behind the plate following today’s shakeup.”

Bottom line, the Braves hope Drake Baldwin returns sooner rather than later so he can take over as the primary catcher.

In other marginal roster moves, the Braves selected the contract of centerfielder DeShawn Kiersey Jr., but he was immediately sent down to Triple-A. Sean Murphy got transferred to the 60-day IL, which was expected because he’s still a few weeks away from returning from his broken finger injury.
